Risk/Reward commissioned me to illustrate and design the graphics for their 2024 festival. The were interested in my “Where’s Waldo”-esque style I used for my Armory Gala illustration. Each of the acts throughout the weekend are pictured in the illustration.

I drew everything in Procreate and finished the poster in InDesign.

This piece was for the Quotes, Lines & Lyrics show in Los Angeles. I wanted to illustrate a map of Jurassic Park that combined elements from the books, movies and video game. My concept was to create a map that visitors would receive when they enter the park as if the park was finished and opened to the public.

The Magic Play follows a young magician trying to get through a live show just hours after his partner (a professional diver) has left him. As the performance progresses, he confronts the fact that the spectacular tricks that impress people on stage don’t serve him as well when it comes to building truthful personal relationships.

I created the cards in Illustrator and finished the poster in Photoshop.

Kodachrome is a quirky drama about a photographer who documents love in unlikely places. (SPOILER: the photographer is a ghooOOOooost!) For this project, I wanted to show moments in people’s lives while also evoking traditional film photography without going in the direction of the classic red and yellow Kodachrome branding. The solution was to create a light box with slides containing archetypal moments in people’s lives.

For Major Barbara, George Bernard Shaw’s 1904 classic comedy about explosive ideas, I was asked to add a bit of humor into this one. I chose to style this art to mimic old hand-painted propaganda posters. I wanted to evoke a gun gag with the little flag coming out, but instead of a gun, it’s a cannon and the flag is a Salvation Army banner – both nods to the characters and major themes in the play.

Mojada is a modern retelling of Medea seen through the lens of immigrants to the United States by playwright Luis Alfaro. In the play, the title character of Medea is taunted with the nickname El Guaco, a snake-eating migrating falcon of the Americas, often referred to as a “laughing falcon” because of its call. In this poster we have a large hawk silhouette that represents Medea set on a scorching desert background with a silhouette of a snake flying above. Bold colors are used to evoke the Mexican flag and to represent the intensity of the story.

You have died of dysentery!

For this show about The Oregon Trail – both the historical period and the computer game – I didn't want to use the iconic black and green colors because I felt that was a bit too obvious and only depicted one of the time periods. I found a photo of the eastern Oregon high desert and designed my own pixelated typography for the title.

To promote this show, we partnered with the annual Portland Retro Gaming Expo and I created a fun photo booth complete with bonnets, cowboy hats and signs with iconic lines from the game so people could choose their fate.

For Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, a gorgeous one-woman play about the legendary Billie Holiday’s final performance, I wanted the central focus to be on the title and Billie’s signature gardenias. I created a silhouette of the iconic singer’s head and popped the light around her hair to create a spotlight effect. A simple palette of black, white and lavender is used to create a simple, elegant and beautiful look with just a hint of sadness.

Taking inspiration from old horror movies, I wanted to bring that gritty black and white film look to this poster for the cult musical about Audrey II, a blood thirsty plant from outer space. I wanted to make sure there was a hint of comedy and camp, so I added a vivid green vine with a single drop of blood. 

When concepting this poster for a stage adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic novel, there was a lot of important imagery to pull from the source material. Rather than chose one over another, I illustrated them all and turned them into a pattern reminiscent of a Victorian era tufted couch or wallpaper. Because of Great Expectations’ iconic status in the literary world, I made the title a bright eye-catching red and created a monochromatic but warm look for the pattern. The overall look of the poster was also similar to that of a classic book cover, creating a striking, but familiar feel.

Threesome follows Leila and Rashid, Egyptian Americans with ties to Cairo and the Arab Spring, as they attempt to solve their relationship issues by inviting a relative stranger into their bedroom to engage in a threesome. What begins as a hilariously awkward evening soon becomes an experience fraught with secrets, raising issues of sexism, possession and independence.

I collaborated with Jelly Studios to create this series of billboards for Portland Center Stage at The Armory. Compelling production photos were chosen to display the wide range of emotions, costumes and actors, and then photoshopped together and color corrected to create a dynamic final image. These billboards and bus ads are the primary component of a multi-year branding awareness campaign and can been seen around the city.

Japanese for enlightenment, Satori, is a line of cigars from Viaje. I don't smoke but I was told that when you smoke these cigars you're meant to reach enlightenment. I depicted the Japanese Buddha meditating with the Mudra hand sign for enlightenment. The band was finished off with metallic gold ink and embossing.

It's-A-Me,...Luigi?! This two-color illustration was created for the Luigi edition of Game Paused's Game Icons book series. Luigi has always been in the shadow of his more famous brother, but in this depiction, Luigi seizes the opportunity to be in the lime light. For some people video games are their religion and the characters in those games take on a saintly feeling. Link, Mario and Samus are depicted as though they were encased in stained glass in the Church of Video Games. 

This isometric world is hand drawn for the 3NES show at the Bottleneck Gallery in New York, NY.

During the height and mad excitement around Pokémon GO in Portland, everyone displayed their team with such pride. I wanted to make something that would combine the pride people have for Portland with that of running around collecting imaginary animals on your phone. 

Each of the legendary birds are depicted with an iconic bridge in Portland. Articuno is depicted with the St. Johns Bridge, known as the prettiest and arguably the most well-known bridge. Moltres is depicted with the Fremont Bridge, the largest and most demanding of the Portland bridges. Zapdos is depicted with the newly constructed Tilikum Crossing bridge, the most angular and distinctive bridge. Lugia is depicted with the Sellwood Bridge, one of the most popular commuter bridges connecting those who live outside the city limits to the metro area.
